Pet Insurance Plan

The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and the Forestry Feed Program is in the midst of a nationwide pet food recall. Why? Because they have discovered Aflatoxin in a dry dog food.

Aflatoxin is a mycotoxin produced by a fungus commonly found in grain such as corn.

They test regularly for toxins as a part of their regular efforts to protect the public and pets at large. The Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner says that Aflatoxin is a very potent carcinogen that in this particular case could have been harmful to pets.

*****A carcinogen is

any substance, radionuclide, or radiation that promotes carcinogenesis, the formation of cancer. This may be due to the ability to damage the genome or to the disruption of cellular metabolic processes.

Hey guys! Certain breeds are predisposed to cancer.

To name a few:

  • Great Danes – Prone to short lifespans, dogs of this breed are most likely to die from cancer.
  • Bernese Mountain Dogs – Also a breed with one of the shortest average lifespans, Bernese Mountain Dogs are prone to several forms of cancer.

There has been a stop sale order placed on the product and a request submitted to that company to remove it from the shelves in Louisiana when they learned of the positive results.

The regulatory testing has resulted in a voluntary recall by Sunshine Mills. The press release I found says that we all should be looking for this. Keep your eyes open while shopping, please!

Look for lot number TD1 05 APRIL 2020 11:50, Best if used by 04/05/2021 Guarantor: Midwood Brands LLC and dispose of it or return it to the store where purchased.

The pet food tested by the LDAF was Family Pet Meaty Cuts Beef Chicken & Cheese Flavors Premium Dog Food manufactured by Sunshine Mills for Midwood Brands LLC which is sold at Family Dollar stores.

Now, let me say this. Just because you don’t live in Louisiana does not mean that you should not be looking out for these lot numbers. Look! You could save your dogs’ life. Remember, some of our dogs are going to get cancer anyway but you don’t have to help by allowing them to accidentally ingest carcinogens. Enough said.

Okay. It’s good dog food.

This is an excellent food source for a small breed dog and is obtainable in Canada and the United States. The main drawback to this product though, is its limited availability.

I mean, you cannot pick this up every and anywhere. You have got to go to more upscale pet food and supply stores. And bring Fluffy with you, will you please? Thank you. Or, You’ve got to get this online. By now, thedoggyperspective.comers know how I feel about Chewy.com because they stay up with trends and they will get great products to you.

Special Note: History of recalls on this product.

In the past, Petcurean products have been affected by one very large recall:

  • In November 2003, the FDA issued a recall for all Go! products that were manufactured in the company’s Texas plant due to reports of liver disease and liver failure. About 80% of this product was sold through a single chain, Pet Food Express.

Jacquelynism: They have since gotten their act together. Nonetheless, read labels and lot numbers, puhleeez.

Wrap Up!

Guys, please do your best to read those labels. Not all food is good food. And, you may choose not to be as forgiving as I have been with regard to recalled products. I have friends who choose not to purchase if a dog food product has ANY history of product recall whatsoever. I’s up to you. Until next time, remember to pickup after your doggo out there.

  1. This is wonderful and very timely information. Thank you for also listing the lot numbers. Since Hurricane Laura, the animal shelters and a few others have been donating food and pet supplies from here in Alabama. I have passed on the info and lot numbers to the local shelter as well. Thank you for helping protect our fur babies.

    • 🐶You are welcome. Spreading the word is crucial for these animals. I think it’s especially important to do that. Thank you so much for sharing with the shelters.

  2. Hi Jacquelyn, thank you for a well informed Post that could save our dogs life. As a dog owner such things scare the life out of me. As you mentioned many of our loved ones will catch cancer but my hope is that it’s not via the food industry who we should trust. I just hope other areas have such stringent testing facilities as yours. Again, thank you for highlighting the risks.

  3. This is a serious case. I learnt that the brands affected are Evolve, Sportsman’s Pride and Triumph, the company said in
a statement that is also posted on the US Food and Drug Administration’s website.”Vitamin D, when consumed at very  high levels, can lead to serious health issues in
dogs including renal dysfunction,” the company said. Symptoms include vomiting, loss
of appetite, increased thirst and urination, excessive drooling and weight loss.

  4. Hello Jacquelyn, thanks for the help with this article and I am really happy to have come across it as it could be of so much help to us all. Sometimes we all fail to get the full knowledge of something before getting it and something like this can be really harmful to our pets. I hope we all see this and get what is best for our pets.

    • Me too! It’d be a shame to lose one because we were unaware. I sincerely hope this blog reaches ONE individual who will choose to do the right thing. Thank you for your comment.

  5. Wow! My aunt stays in Louisiana and she has two dogs. I must forward this to her this minute. Wow! How bad of some companies to make unworthy foods for pets and hurt them. That’s really bad to see and it should be curved as fast as they can be. Seriously. This is purely bad and inhumane. Thanks for the information though.
